Riddle of Steel

Never give a sword to a man who can’t dance

“Never give a sword to a man who can’t dance” – Confucius

I have been spending a considerable amount of time looking at blades. Researching them in this day and age should be easier than in the past but the internet doesn’t necessarily make it any easier in picking one out to use. To start SCA fencing is different from Olympic fencing; the eclectic foils and the like are not used. Also it was recommended to me by the Marshal to start with heavy rapier as opposed to light (epee). I live in the Kingdom of Atlantia and lately no one has been doing light rapier (epee) so I am looking at rapiers and Schlager.

Not knowing who I can buy from The Society Blade type was a rather good place to start. It lists manufactures and the types of blades allowed per kingdom. Now with a list of approved manufactures in hand began to look at price which is a big thing for most people. Much like your helm in heavy fighting it can be the most expensive item in your inventory.

A common agreement in my group is that Darkwood Armory makes the best however as someone who is new to rapier I am not too inclined to fork out $400 for a sword. (of course this doesn’t mean I won’t in the future) I believe that with my first blade I am going to purchase a Hanwei Practical Rapier and with my height it is going to be the 43 Inch in length. Zen Warrior Armory has a new rapier starting kit so along with some of the necessary gear I am going to choose a second weapon, one of their epee’s and a dagger. So much steel so little time.
