Riddle of Steel

The Mummy Returns – again

“If you defy an enemy by doubting his courage you double it.” – ancient egyptian proverb

I thought I might be an archeologist when I was in school and actually spent some in Israel digging.  So understand when someone plays with history it can be very annoying.  When the Mummy (1999) came out I sort of cringed but really Egyptology is not really my cup of tea; I prefer Roman or Greek History and decided not to get too excited about it. (please don’t get me started on the movie The Patriot)

My wife on the other hand is an ancient Egyptian fanatic so it was my husbandly duty to see the movie. It really was not a chore I am a real fan of the action movie genre and I rather like Brendan Fraser.  Critics aside (-really people- these movies are –not- made for you) it was a fun romp lots of sword fighting, explosions and more.  The bad guy after a lot more sword fighting falls and the movie ends. I waited for a second one. Really you knew if the first one made a ton of money there would be a second.

Now the next chapter The Mummy Returns (2001) I liked the whole reincarnation aspect of it and the duel between Princess Nefertiri and Anck Su Namun early in the movie was rather well done. Although I liked the first movie more over all I enjoyed the second and it appeared that was going to be it. I mean you sort of felt sorry for High Priest Imhotep at the end but he and his girlfriend were gone sent back to the land of the dead. (we are going to ignore the cartoon series “The Mummy: The Animated Series (2001))

Fast forward seven years and we now have The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. OK my wife is excited but I cannot think that they have jumped the shark. If you have not been keeping up Rachel Weisz has not returned as Evelyn that’s my first concern but not only concern.  Now I really like John Hannah (who plays Jonathan) and of course Jet Li but Luke Ford who plays the 18 year old Alex I have been told appears to be older than his supposed to be father Brendan Fraser.  I am sure that Maria Bello as Evy is good but she is no Rachel Weisz (have I mentioned she isn’t in the movie)  I believe for this one I am going to watch the boys and allow my wife to go see it without distraction. I will wait for the DVD. (if you do plan on attending this weekend be sure not to miss the new trailer for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince )

I on the other hand I am going to take my eldest to go see Hellboy II: The Golden Army this weekend, more sword fighting you betcha.
