AdeptiCon 2009 News

No matter how you’re involved in the hobby, AdeptiCon has an event for you! We have tournaments to satisfy your competitive urges, seminars that develop and refine your skills, open gaming and demos to give you a chance to relax and explore new games, and many other events.

I cannot speak of Warhammer Fantasy and not mention AdeptiCon. For those interested AdeptiCon will return April 3 – 5, 2009 at a new location to the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center in Lombard, IL,  which is just outside of Chicago. We should be hearing a lot more from them as we get closer.

Going into their 7th year AdeptiCon is one of , if not, the premier wargaming conventions. People come from all over the world to buy miniatures, attend seminars and to game. Some of the biggest and best tournements will take place over the weekend.

I am sticking to Bretonnians for now

The Knights of Bretonnia are renowned for their skill at arms, their bravery and chivalry. A Bretonnian army is an impressive sight; ranks of knights with fluttering pennants adorned with personal heraldry, backed up with scores of filthy, low born peasants.

Having eclectic tastes can be at times expensive. I mentioned the other day how computer games can be a time sink well I have a hobby that if I let it could be a money sink. I have been playing games as long as I could pick up a pair of dice. I am speaking of tabletop Wargames. People have been playing wargames for hundreds of years, the Prussians played a game called Kriegsspiel to help them with real wars and even the famous HG Wells wrote a set of rules called Little Wars.

I do play historical quite often and find them a lot of fun but right now I have been spending a lot of my time (when not fencing or playing WOW) painting a new Games Workshop Bretonnia army. Games Workshop has been around for almost 30 years and they have a number of wargames on the market. The two most popular is Warhammer 40,000, a Scifi based game and the second Warhammer Fantasy. I started playing WHFB back in the 2nd edition, and then got serious with the 3rd edition (Orange hard bound book). I even took 1st place at the Warhammer Fantasy Battle tournament at Origins with my Empire army.

When Games Workshop released a 5th edition of the game I took a break and started to just play 40K and historicals (I am a big fan of Napoleonic and American Civil War wargaming) Since moving up here I decided to give Warhammer Fantasy a try again. My eldest son loves the GW world background and he was very excited as I started to bring home troops. Think replaying the battles of Lord of the Rings but with little 25mm lead and plastic figures. (they also have a Lord of the Rings game) He is now the proud owner of a Orc and Goblin army and a Lizardmen army. (think dinosaurs with swords and shields, but much smaller). I looked at Empire first but decided to go back to an old army that I used to play Bretonnia.

The Bretonnia army has a some what historical feel which I like and it is almost a 100 years war (think Henry V) army with its mounted Knights and peasant bowmen. I like the heraldry and the mix of Knights and foot. It has a historical feel and the knights as units go pack a wallop on the charge. Back up your knights with good foot troops and you have an all around good army. Combined arms is a good thing although I have seen just cavalry lists. On the fantasy side there are even wizards casting spells and Pegasus knights.

Now as hobbies go its cheap I mean you can pay $400 for a good driver (I know I have seen my father shell out that much money) but of course its hard to stop at one army. Games Workshop figures can be prett expensive as figures go but they are still very nice. It is easy to pay $1000 for an entire army. I have some 45 knights and about 100 men of arms to paint.

I am sticking to Bretonnians for now.
